Danske Bank Estonia's ex-CEO found dead

Aivar Rehe, the former head of Danske Bank A/S' Estonian branch, was found dead, several news outlets reported, citing local police.

Rehe, who headed the branch from 2007 to 2015, had been missing from his home in the Estonian capital of Tallinn for days, Reuters noted. Police found his body in a garden in what appears to be a suicide, Bloomberg News wrote separately, citing public broadcaster ERR.

The Danish lender's Estonian branch is at the center of a €200 billion money laundering scandal that has drawn in several other banks. Local and international authorities are investigating the matter, with Rehe standing as a witness in the ongoing investigation, a spokeswoman for the Estonian prosecutor's office told Reuters.

He is not considered a suspect in any case or probe and was not part of a group of bankers that police detained in 2018, Bloomberg wrote.

In March, Rehe said the Estonian unit had a sufficient check and controls system when he was at the helm, adding that anti-money laundering rules at that time were "significantly different" compared to current regulations, Bloomberg noted.
