South Korean cinema chains boycott Netflix's 'Okja' movie

South Korean cinema chains Lotte Cinema and Megabox joined CJ CGV in refusing to screen Netflix Inc.'s fantasy drama "Okja" at their theaters, Variety reported June 7.

The move is in response to the streaming giant's plan for a day-and-date cinematic and online release, which the theater chains claim disrupts the distribution ecosystem in South Korea. Currently, movies are made available for streaming three weeks after their theatrical debut.

The movie's local distributor Next Entertainment World reportedly said it would "look for other ways" to release "Okja" in theaters June 29.
