Slovakia's European Commissioner launches bid to succeed Juncker

Slovakia's Maroš Šefcovic opened a bid to succeed European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and said he would bolster the European Union's position in international trade, Reuters and Politico reported.

Šefcovic, who serves as the European Commission's vice president for energy, said his candidacy was proposed by a Czech delegation during a meeting of center-left parties in Slovakia, which was also attended by groups from Hungary, Poland and Bulgaria.

The 51-year-old European Commissioner said he would pursue the nomination of the center-left Party of European Socialists in the European Parliament.

Šefcovic plans to focus on strengthening the EU's industrial policy and modernizing its economy, improving ties between new and old member states, and moving the bloc to a "more assertive position" in international trade, according to the reports.

Leaders of EU member states must agree on a successor to Juncker after the European Parliament elections in May 2019. EU lawmakers also need to confirm the nominee before November 2019, when the next commission president is due to take over.
