Woolworths Group Ltd. has developed a limited-edition pale ale called Loafer made from unsold loaves of bread from Woolworths-owned stores.
The Australian food retailer said more than 350kg of leftover bread from its supermarkets have been diverted from landfills to be repurposed and brewed into the alcoholic beverage.
Woolworths said the beer, which is being exclusively sold in BWS and Dan Murphy's outlets, will help raise funds for Feed Appeal, a food relief program in the country.
"For every 6 pack of 'Loafer' purchased, you will not only help to put a meal on the table for someone in need, but you will also be enjoying a beer that has helped divert unsold loaves of bread from heading to landfill," Adrian Cullen, head of sustainability at Woolworths, said in a statement.
The company will donate 50 Australian cents to Feed Appeal for every six-pack purchased and donate A$2 to the organization for every carton sold.
The craft beer was manufactured by Tribe Breweries Pty. Ltd., which is based in Goulburn, New South Wales.
