Thomas Cook's Nordic unit receives nonbinding offer

Beleaguered travel operator Thomas Cook Group PLC received a nonbinding offer for its Nordic operations, Reuters reported Oct. 11, citing a company representative.

"The bid that has been placed is for the whole Nordic operations, which is Thomas Cook Northern Europe plus the Nordic airline," said Fredrik Henriksson, head of communications & sustainability at Thomas Cook Northern Europe.

Thomas Cook Northern Europe sells trips from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland and includes tour operators Ving, Globetrotter, Spies, Tjäreborg and the airline Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia. Hotel company Hotels & Resorts, which include the hotel chains Sunwing Family Resorts, Ocean Beach Club and Sunprime Hotels, is also a part of the group's Nordic operations. The group sells about 1,600,000 trips annually in the Nordic countries.

Several parties had shown an interest in the Nordic unit, Henriksson reportedly said, but he refused to give more details.

"The only thing we can say at the moment is that we are counting on a relatively quick sales process," Henriksson said.

Private equity firm Triton, which made a bid earlier this year to acquire Thomas Cook's Northern Europe business, declined to comment on whether it made the offer or was considering making one, the news wire said.

Thomas Cook collapsed last month after it failed to secure a £900 million rescue deal from Fosun International Ltd.-owned Fosun Tourism Group.
