Everything Everywhere to launch 5G in 16 UK cities in 2019

British Telecom's Everything Everywhere Ltd. unit unveiled plans to set up 5G sites in 16 cities across the U.K. in 2019.

The 5G technology will first be introduced in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester. The mobile operator plans to build 5G in the busiest parts of the six launch cities, including Hyde Park in London, Manchester Arena, Belfast City Airport, the Welsh Assembly, Edinburgh Waverly train station and Birmingham's Bullring.

The company also will launch 5G across the busiest parts of Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry and Bristol in 2019. "The 5G rollout strategy is determined by the number of business and consumer customers the EE network connects in busy places, and the amount of data those customers use," the company said.

Everything Everywhere will continue to upgrade 4G sites as part of its overall network strategy. The busiest sites will have five carriers of 4G spectrum supporting the new 5G spectrum.

Vodafone Group PLC, meanwhile, has no plans to enter a 5G "arms race," the company's CEO Nick Read said during a Nov. 13 earnings call. Instead, the company will aim to roll out 5G network in line with the leading incumbents in each of its markets over the next two years, Read added.
