Bayerische Motoren Werke AG on Sept. 9 posted a 4.4% year-over-year growth in worldwide sales in August, continuing a streak of gains that started in March.
The German carmaker sold a total of 181,126 premium BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles during the month.
Sales of BMW-branded vehicles rose 4.1% year over year in August to 157,889 units. The new and revised BMW X vehicles continuing to be the brand's biggest growth drivers with a 34.5% year over year growth in sales to a total of 76,833 units in August.
"This positive sales development underlines the impact of our model offensive. Our new X models are proving very popular with our customers," Pieter Nota, a member of BMW's management board, responsible for customer, brands and sales, said in a statement.
BMW sold a total of 10,857 electric vehicles during the month, down 7% from the same month last year. This is despite the continued strong sales growth of the electric BMW i3.
Meanwhile, global sales of Mini cars jumped 6.2% year over year to 22,859 units, while BMW Motorrad, the group's motorcycle brand, saw global sales grow 9.1% year over year to 11,818 units.
On a year-to-date basis, the BMW group saw sales inch up 1.3% to 1,617,512 units amid a volatile global market environment.
