NorZinc signs traditional land use agreement for Prairie Creek all-season road

NorZinc Ltd. entered into a traditional land use agreement with the Nah?a Dehé Dene Band, or NDDB, for construction and operation of an all-season road to connect its Prairie Creek zinc-lead-silver property to the Liard Highway in Canada's Northwest Territories.

The NDDB of Nahanni Butte is the nearest community to the Prairie Creek mine, the company said Jan. 16.

The agreement comprises a framework to ensure training, employment and business contracts are available to the NDDB and to assure mutual benefits for both parties.

The NDDB and NorZinc will establish a committee to oversee the implementation of the deal, and to support NDDB liaison roles to gain employment and business capacity to benefit the Indigenous community and businesses. The company will also make annual contributions to an education fund for the band.

NorZinc said the land use agreement, along with an existing impact benefits agreement with the NDDB, ensures local support for Prairie Creek as the new access road moves through the final phase of permitting.

The company is also negotiating a road benefit agreement with the Łíídlįį Kų́ę́ First Nation of Fort Simpson, the largest community within the Dehcho region, about 185 kilometers east of the property.
