US ambassador to Mexico announces exit amid continued NAFTA uncertainty

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Roberta Jacobson said she will quit her post in May, at a time when uncertainty persists over the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, Reuters reported.

In a statement released on Twitter, Jacobson said she will pursue new opportunities and claimed that ties between the U.S. and Mexico are "strong and crucial."

Jacobson said she did not know who would succeed her, but Mexican newspaper Reforma reported that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to nominate former AT&T Inc. CEO Ed Whitacre as her replacement, according to Reuters.

The seventh round of negotiations to rework NAFTA is underway. U.S. lawmakers who attended the most recent talks were optimistic that negotiations would not break down.
