Peru's vice president to be sworn in after embattled Kuczynski resigns

Peru's Vice President Martin Vizcarra will be sworn in as president March 23 after President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski offered his resignation ahead of an impeachment vote, Reuters reported March 22.

Luis Galarreta, Peru's head of Congress, said that all of Peru's legislative blocs agreed to accept Kuczynski's resignation in a plenary session March 22.

Kuczynski announced his resignation to avoid impeachment after the opposition released videos showing his allies offering public work contracts in exchange for political support.

He denied wrongdoing and blamed the opposition for portraying him as corrupt.
