ICU Medical in early stage talks to merge with Smiths Group medical device unit

ICU Medical Inc. is in early stage talks to merge with U.K.-based industrial conglomerate Smiths Group PLC's medical device unit.

There is no certainty a deal will be concluded, Smiths Group said in a news release. Potential financial terms were not disclosed.

Smiths Group has been evaluating options for Smiths Medical Inc. for some time, the Financial Times (London) reported, citing two people close to the situation. St. Paul, Minn.-based Smiths Medical makes medical devices and equipment for hospital, emergency, home, and specialist environments.

Another option could see Smiths Medical injected into San Clemente, Calif.-based ICU Medical, with Smiths Group retaining a stake in the new entity, according to the sources.

ICU Medical makes medical devices used in vascular therapy, critical care and oncology applications.
