Wash. regulator fines US Concealed Carry Association for illegal insurance sale

The Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner fined the United States Concealed Carry Association Inc., or USCCA, for selling unauthorized insurance that illegally covers defense costs for alleged criminal shootings.

The association, which was also found to be illegally acting as an insurer, agreed to pay a $100,000 fine and $5,457 in unpaid premium taxes, penalties and interest for violating state law. USCCA also agreed to stop selling insurance in Washington.

USCCA advertised a protection plan bundled with membership in the association, offering coverage of expenses that result from defending against criminal charges involving the use of a firearm or other weapon. It is illegal in Washington to insure intentional criminal activity.

The association voluntarily halted the sale of its membership and protection plan on Jan. 30 after selling insurance to 1,675 customers in the state between Dec. 1, 2018, and Jan. 30, 2019, collecting $241,000.

In January, Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler sought a $102,000 fine from Chubb Ltd.'s Illinois Union Insurance Co. and a $75,000 penalty against Lockton Affinity LLC for selling similar illegal liability policies in Washington under the Carry Guard program of the National Rifle Association.
