Hughes Network Systems LLC teamed up with Virtual Network Communications Inc. to unveil a service, which extends mobile network connectivity using helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles.
The service, called Hughes HeloCell Solution, combines Virtual Network's deployable LTE technology with Hughes JUPITER and HM satellite systems to support global applications for government, militaries, first responders and commercial mobile network operators, according to an Aug. 20 news release.
The service uses communications links on a rotary-wing aircraft to extend the cellular coverage radius to and from the network core. Virtual Network said the network will help expand high-speed 4G services in underserved parts of the world.
Virtual Network CEO Mohan Tammisetti said the company is also working on a new 5G solution, which will integrate with Hughes JUPITER platform.
Hughes is a wholly owned subsidiary of EchoStar Corp. Virtual Network Communications designs, develops and manufactures a line of network products for wireless network operators.
