Alibaba anticounterfeit alliance membership triples

The membership of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s anticounterfeiting alliance has more than tripled as it continues collaborating with brands to combat fake goods sold through its online marketplaces, according to a May 7 post on its news site Alizila.

The alliance has grown to 105 brands from the 30 that joined in January 2017, and covers 12 industries.

New members include food giants Danone and Nestlé SA; pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare company GlaxoSmithKline PLC; internationally known brands such as L'Oréal SA, Ralph Lauren Corp., Toyota Motor Corp., Under Armour Inc. and Panasonic Corp.; Chinese liquor makers Kweichow Moutai Co. Ltd. and Wuliangye Yibin Co. Ltd.; and Chinese home appliance makers Gree Electric Appliances Inc. of Zhuhai and Haier Electronics Group Co. Ltd.

The e-commerce giant has implemented several initiatives to accelerate intellectual property protection. These include test buying to spot-check authenticity and upgrading its IP protection portal for rights holders to report listings of possible fakes on Alibaba's marketplaces, which the company said have nearly 620 million monthly active users and 1.8 billion listings.
