Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.'s CEO, Ren Zhengfei, said the Chinese telecom equipment company is willing to license 5G technologies to a U.S. company exclusively, rather than to companies based in Europe, Japan or South Korea.
"Since the U.S. has no such company [like Huawei] that produces a full 5G technology stack, we would like to license the technology to a U.S. company to be fair in the 5G race," Ren said during a panel discussion in Shenzhen on Sept. 26.

Huawei's technology portfolio includes 5G patents, source codes, hardware and software manufacturing know-how, and chip designs.
The CEO said the company plans to use revenues generated from licensing its 5G technology to update and invest in other internal technology projects.
The company is also not afraid of creating a new rival with the offer, since "competition is a driver," Ren added.
Earlier this month, Ren said Huawei may sell its 5G technology to a Western buyer in a transaction that could be valued at tens of billions of dollars, according to an interview with The Economist.
He said the buyer would be able to modify Huawei's source code and, in turn, the Chinese company would retain its existing 5G contracts and would continue selling its own 5G equipment.
