SNL European bank indexes, Q1'17 performance

European banks recorded broadly positive market performances during the first quarter of 2017, according to SNL Financial's regional bank indexes.

All eight indexes finished the quarter in positive territory, led by a 13.1% rise in the SNL Mediterranean/Southern European Bank index. The SNL France and Benelux index spent a significant portion of the quarter in loss-making territory amid investor concerns over the French presidential election, but it concluded the quarter with a 4.9% gain.

The overall SNL European Bank index was up 4.8%.
