Southern Power brings online 120-MW Texas solar facility

Southern Power Co. has achieved commercial operation at the 120-MW East Pecos solar facility in Pecos County, Texas.

East Pecos will sell electricity and associated renewable energy credits to Austin Energy under a 15-year power purchase agreement, helping the utility meet its goal of 55% renewable supply by 2025, according to an April 5 release.

Construction of the approximately 1,000-acre project began in February 2016. First Solar Inc. built and will operate and maintain the facility, which features approximately 1.2 million solar panels.

The Southern Co. subsidiary acquired the East Pecos project from First Solar in March 2016.
