Japan edged out China in July as the top foreign holder of U.S. Treasurys for the second consecutive month, increasing its holdings to $1.131 trillion from $1.123 trillion in June, latest data from the U.S. Treasury Department showed.
China's holdings fell to $1.110 trillion from $1.113 trillion a month ago. Overall foreign holdings of U.S. Treasurys dropped to $6.631 trillion from $6.636 trillion.
Net foreign purchases of long-term securities amounted to $84.3 billion in July, taking into account transactions in both foreign and U.S. securities. That followed an upwardly revised inflow of $100.6 billion in June.
