Georgia premier steps down

Mamuka Bakhtadze, the Georgian prime minister, has stepped down after claiming to have accomplished his mission, Bloomberg News reported.

The prime minister announced his resignation on social media, saying he would conduct a news conference later in the day.

An announcement on a candidate to replace Bakhtadze as prime minister is due Sept. 3, with reports suggesting that Georgi Gakharia, the interior minister, could take the top job, Bloomberg reported.

The country, which is grappling with a weak currency, faced anti-Russia protests in June in the capital Tbilisi that led to a violent crackdown by police.

Georgia severed diplomatic ties with Russia after the former lost a war with the latter in 2008, Reuters reported. Only a few states, including Moscow, recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the two breakaway Georgian regions, according to The Moscow Times.
