Singapore's StarHub may drop Discovery channels following payment dispute

Discovery Communications LLC’s portfolio of 11 channels may be dropped from StarHub Ltd. platform following a payment row between the two companies, according to a May 30 statement from the U.S. broadcast giant.

After June 30, StarHub subscribers will no longer be able to watch Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, Discovery Science, Discovery Asia, Eurosport and Setanta on both StarHub TV and streaming service StarHub Go. Discovery’s expanded lifestyle offering, which includes recent addition HGTV, Asian Food Channel, Food Network and Travel Channel, will also no longer be available on StarHub platforms after Aug. 31.

Discovery said StarHub was "not prepared to pay fair value" for its content.

"We have a responsibility to now take the extraordinary step of informing our viewers that they may lose all the Discovery channels they are paying for on StarHub," the statement added.

The U.S. broadcast giant stressed it still has "hope to resume discussions" with StarHub. In the meantime, Discovery’s subscribers can watch channels including Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, Discovery Science, Discovery Asia, Eve, DMAX and Eurosport on Singtel TV.

When asked for a comment, a StarHub spokesperson told The Straits Times that the company is currently in renewal negotiations with Discovery. The spokesperson added that StarHub is also "acquiring fresh replacement content in the event that negotiations prove unsuccessful."

Discovery Communications is owned by Discovery Inc.
