Total U.S. coal rail traffic for the week ended Sept. 7 decreased 7.0% year over year to 79,446 carloads, according to data from the Association of American Railroads.
Year-to-date coal rail traffic dropped 6.6% through the week, while total rail traffic for the week decreased 6.6% year over year to 469,285 carloads and intermodal units.

BNSF Railway Co. coal shipment volumes clocked in at 37,879 carloads in the week ended Sept. 7, decreasing 6.5% from the previous week's 40,491 carloads but up 2.8% from 36,831 carloads in the year-ago week.
Union Pacific Corp.'s weekly coal shipment volumes totaled 19,163 carloads, falling 1.7% from 19,489 carloads in the previous week and 17.1% lower than the previous year's weekly volume of 23,129 carloads.
Eastern railroad CSX Transportation Inc.'s shipment volumes of coal stood at 14,839 carloads, decreasing 13.3% from the previous week's 17,112 carloads and down 11.8% compared to 16,816 carloads in the same week of 2018.
Norfolk Southern Corp.'s coal shipment volumes totaled 14,646 carloads for the week, falling 11.4% from the previous week's 16,530 carloads and slipping 16.6% compared to 17,564 carloads in the same week a year ago.
Kansas City Southern's latest weekly coal shipment volume was 2,924 carloads, rising 3.4% from 2,828 carloads in the previous week. The railroad serves 10 U.S. states and Mexico.
