Nuclear update: Total US output sags below 90% with loss of 3 units

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability was pegged at 88.36% early March 12, down from 90.59% on March 9 and below the 90.02% rating reported on the same day in 2017.

Pulling down total production was the loss of Dominion Energy Inc.'s North Anna 1 in Virginia, which was shut for what private sources indicate is planned seasonal maintenance.

Additionally, Nebraska Public Power District's Cooper reactor in Nebraska was offline early March 12 after a high pressure coolant injection system was declared inoperable, a filing with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission showed.

Also, Florida Power & Light Co.'s St. Lucie 1 in Florida was shut for unspecified reasons as of early March 12. The unit had been running at 100% on March 9.

Power at Exelon Corp.'s Clinton unit in Illinois was reduced to 85% as of early March 12, down from 99% on March 9.

On the flip side, the R.E. Ginna unit in New York, which is owned by Exelon and EDF Group, was operating at 74% as of early March 12. The plant was offline as of March 9.

Entergy Corp.'s Grand Gulf 1 reactor in Mississippi was operating at 100% early March 12, up from 90% on March 9.
