About 2,500 employees of General Motors Co.'s South Korean Unit enrolled in the company's voluntary retirement program amidst discussions of restructuring and job cuts, The Nikkei Asian Review reported March 7.
The figure is about 16% of GM Korea's total workforce, and about a thousand of those who opted for the program are working for the Gunsan facility, which will be closed by the end of May.
According to the report, workers believe that the restructuring will not stop with Gunsan and decided to opt for the retirement package instead of being laid off.
