Drax wins UK approval to develop 1.8-GW gas turbine unit

Drax Group PLC obtained planning approval to develop a combined cycle gas turbine project at its power station in North Yorkshire, U.K.

The company, however, still needs to secure a capacity market agreement to underpin the investment needed for the project. If developed, 1.8 GW of new capacity would be available at Drax from October 2023.

The project is intended to help the U.K. to transition to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the company said Oct. 4.
