PayPal subsidiary's cybersecurity issue may affect up to 1.6 million customers

PayPal Holdings Inc. said the personally identifiable information of up to 1.6 million customers of its subsidiary TIO Networks Corp.'s bill payment platform were compromised in a recent data breach.

PayPal discovered those vulnerabilities and suspended TIO's operations in November. PayPal acquired the payment processor in July, but the platforms were not integrated.

"The PayPal platform is not impacted in any way, as the TIO systems are completely separate from the PayPal network," PayPal said, adding that its own customers' data remains secure.

TIO is working with the companies it services to notify those who may be affected. PayPal is working with a consumer credit reporting agency to provide free credit monitoring memberships.

Those affected will be contacted directly and receive instructions to sign up for monitoring.
