China to step up monitoring of medical devices sold online

The China Food and Drug administration, or CFDA, will boost its online monitoring efforts ahead of implementing new rules for selling of medical devices over the internet, a Feb. 27 notice said.

Coming into effect on March 1, the CFDA will also launch a medical device registration system on its website to allow companies to request online trading approvals.

The guidelines, released in December 2017, aim to strengthen the supervision of medical devices and equipment sold online and to ensure the safety of the public.

Companies involved in trading medical devices online, which include medical device manufacturers as well as third-party trading services providers, should register their business information such as manufacturing certificates and product registration details to their local regulatory authorities.

Provincial level authorities should complete a company's registration application within seven working days and conduct on-site inspections to verify the information provided within three months of the filing.

China's increased supervision of medical device sales over the internet falls in line with its aim to strengthen the regulation of the sector.

In November 2017, the CFDA and the National Health and Family Planning Commission jointly issued new rules for conducting clinical trials on medical devices, which became effective Jan. 1.
