UK energy minister muses about possible break up of National Grid

Demands to break up National Grid PLC have reportedly intensified following widespread power cuts in August.

"Frankly I think there is a question about the ESO [electricity system operator] and its role within the National Grid," U.K. Energy Minister Kwasi Kwarteng was quoted telling the Financial Times.

Kwarteng sees the 2017 decision by the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets, or Ofgem, to keep ESO within the National Grid group as a temporary solution, describing it as a "staging post to another iteration where the two entities might be separate."

Analysts have suggested that the Conservative Party form a public body responsible for the system operator role as opposed to renationalization calls by the Labour Party.

The company is being investigated by Ofgem over the August power cut.
