Delta Air Lines Inc. plans to hire 12,000 new employees in 2019 and 2020 as the company tries to keep the new market share it has obtained from competitors affected by the global grounding of Boeing Co. 737 Max aircraft.
Delta Air, which does not fly the troubled Boeing 737 Max, is hiring 6,000 employees this year and at least another 6,000 next year, CEO Ed Bastian said in an interview with CNBC News.
"We're hiring in all categories of the company," Bastian said, adding that he expects Delta Air to preserve its recent market-share gains.
Delta Air earlier reported that its adjusted net income grew to $1.51 billion, or $2.32 per share, in the third quarter, from $1.24 billion, or $1.80 per share, a year ago.
Total operating revenue rose year over year in the third quarter to $12.56 billion from $11.95 billion.
For the fourth quarter, Delta Air expects to earn between $1.20 per share and $1.50 per share.
