U.S. President Donald Trump scrapped a planned trip to Denmark next month after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dismissed his offer to buy Greenland.
"Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time..." Trump said in an Aug. 20 tweet, adding that he "look[s] forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!"
Frederiksen said Aug. 18 that Greenland was not for sale and that the idea of selling it to the U.S. was "absurd" after Trump, a former real estate developer, expressed interest in buying the autonomous Danish territory, Reuters reported.
Trump was supposed to meet Frederiksen and Greenland Premier Kim Kielsen in Copenhagen on Sept. 2-3.
