Open interest on Henry Hub gas futures hits record high

CME Group Inc.'s benchmark Henry Hub natural gas futures open interest reached a record 1,617,589 contracts on Aug. 31, according to a Sept. 4 news release.

CME Group, the operator of derivatives and futures exchanges, also said nine of the top 10 Henry Hub natural gas futures open interest days occurred during August, with the previous record of 1,606,874 contracts set on Aug. 17. The last record that was not set during August of this year was on April 18, 2013. Open interest is the number of outstanding positions held by all participants in a market.

CME Group offers Henry Hub natural gas futures and options to market participants seeking to hedge gas price risk. Henry Hub gas futures contracts are subject to the rules of NYMEX.
