The week in OTT: Netflix continues content push; Discovery eyes OTT service

The week in over-the-top provides a recap of recent news related to streaming initiatives in the U.S. from various networks and platforms.

* Netflix Inc. will premiere "Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat," a cooking series based on Samin Nosrat's book of the same name, on Oct. 19. "The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell" is the other new food series on Netflix, the company said July 29. Also, Netflix said it will premiere "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" on Oct. 26; "The Kominsky Method" on Nov. 16; fifth season of "Chef's Table" on Sept. 28; and "The Innocents" on Aug. 24.

* In more Netflix news, the company unveiled new scripted series "Madam C.J. Walker" and "White Lines." "Madam C.J. Walker" is an eight-episode series about black hair care pioneer and mogul Madam C.J. Walker, while "White Lines" looks into the mysterious disappearance of a legendary Manchester DJ from Ibiza, the company said July 29. Limited series "Maniac," which will premiere Sept. 21, is about two strangers who were drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial, each for their own reasons.

* Amazon.com Inc.'s Amazon Studios placed a series order for "The Expatriates," Multichannel News reported July 28, citing an official statement. The series from Nicole Kidman's Blossom Films explores a community of female expats living in Hong Kong. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said the company also picked up an event series from Lena Waithe, called "Them," and comedy series "Upload" from Greg Daniels.

* Discovery Inc. is mulling plans to launch a direct-to-consumer streaming service in the range of $5 a month to $8 a month, Adweek reported July 27. The service is expected to let subscribers access 17 networks from the company.

* Cox Communications Inc.'s Contour customers can now access Google LLC's YouTube Kids and NPR One, according to a July 26 news release. Apps for Netflix's streaming, YouTube and iHeartMedia Inc.'s iHeartRadio are also available on the Contour platform.

* Netflix will develop a movie based on a book, called "Shoe Dog," by NIKE Inc. co-founder and board Chairman Emeritus Phil Knight. The book "offers a rare and revealing look at the notoriously media-shy man" behind one of the world's most iconic brands, according to a July 26 news release.

* Netflix picked up a dark comedy series, called "Daybreak." Based on a graphic novel by Brian Ralph, the 10-episode series finds a 17-year-old high school outcast searching for his missing girlfriend in post-apocalyptic Glendale, Calif., the company said July 26.

* Netflix placed a 10-episode series order for horror-fantasy series "Locke & Key." The series revolves around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them powers and abilities, the company said July 25.

* Netflix ordered an untitled drama series from executive producers Marc Webb and Chris Keyser. The 10-episode series follows a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported to a facsimile of their wealthy New England town, the company said July 24.
