Softbank, Yahoo Japan JV partner with India's Paytm on payment service

PayPay Corp., a joint venture between Japanese tech giant SoftBank Group Corp. and internet company Yahoo Japan Corp., is set to roll out a barcode-based smartphone payment service called PayPay in the fall of 2018.

The company will tie up with Indian digital wallet company Paytm to leverage the latter's technology and expertise in mobile payments, according to a July 27 release.

The launch of the new payment service will promote the broader use of cashless payment in Japan and offer services to both consumers and affiliated stores.

With the launch of PayPay, Yahoo Japan will terminate Yahoo! Wallet's current smartphone settlement function. PayPay will be integrated with Yahoo! Japan ID, giving existing Yahoo! Wallet customers the option to use its functions within the former's smartphone application.
