Amazon raises seller fees by 3% in France after government passes digital tax

Amazon.com Inc. will raise seller fees by 3% for small and medium-sized businesses in France, CNBC reported Aug. 19, citing a merchant on the company's website.

The move comes after the French government passed a 3% tax on digital services in July. The tax applies to companies with annual revenues from the covered services of at least €750 million globally and €25 million in France.

Amazon said the tax is directed at the marketplace services it provides to businesses, so it "had no choice but to pass it down to selling partners," CNBC reported, citing a company statement.

Amazon and other technology companies including Facebook Inc. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google LLC testified against the French tax at a U.S. government hearing Aug. 19, saying that the tax unfairly targets large U.S. tech companies.
