Worker strike halts ops at Mitsubishi Materials' Gresik copper smelter

Operations have been suspended at Mitsubishi Materials Corp.'s majority-owned Gresik copper smelter in Indonesia since Jan. 19 amid a worker strike, Metal Bulletin reported Feb. 1, citing a company executive.

The company plans to restart operations as soon as possible, Mitsubishi Materials' Hiroshi Shimizu told the news outlet.

PT Smelting operates the Gresik smelter on Indonesia's Java Island and is a joint venture 60.5% owned by Mitsubishi Materials and 25% by Freeport-McMoRan Inc.

Mitsubishi Corp. owns 9.5% and JX Nippon Mining Metals Corp. owns the remaining 5%.
