Most Japanese automakers report mixed sales, production results in August

Major Japanese automakers, including Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. Ltd., Mazda Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp., reported mixed sales and production results in August, while some companies such as Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., Subaru Corp. and Suzuki Motor Corp. posted declines locally and overseas during the month.

Toyota saw domestic sales jump 8.9% year over year to 174,072 units even as local production fell 1.4% to 308,894 vehicles. Sales outside the country inched up 0.9% to 713,101 automobiles despite production falling 7.6% year over year to 502,512 units. Globally, Toyota saw sales rise 2.4% to 887,173 vehicles even as worldwide production fell 5.3% to 811,406 units.

Toyota and Mazda were the only companies to record an increase in exports from Japan during the month. Toyota's exports rose 2.6% to 154,340 vehicles, while Mazda saw exports climb 12.8% to 64,741 units.

At home, Mazda's production jumped 16.1% to 75,266 vehicles, while overseas production fell 5.7% to 42,787. Worldwide production totaled 118,053 vehicles, up 7.1% year over year. Sales of Mazda cars in Japan fell 6.3% to 14,422 units.

Honda also posted mixed results during the month. The company fared well in its home market in August, with sales jumping 20.3% year over year to 57,370 units and local production rising 12.9% to 65,674 units.

However, Honda saw exports plummet 53.5% to 7,008 units. Overseas production also inched down 2.8% to 350,464 vehicles, bringing total worldwide production down 0.6% to 416,138 vehicles

Increase

Mitsubishi was the only carmaker to record an increase in overseas production for the month at 58,816 units, up 21.4% year over year and offsetting a 15% decline in domestic production at 39,488 vehicles. Globally, Mitsubishi's production rose 3.6% to 98,304 units. Sales of Mitsubishi vehicles in Japan rose 12.9% to 7,765 vehicles, but exports from the country plunged 20.5% to 26,717 units.

Nissan, Subaru and Suzuki, meanwhile, saw flagging sales and production both at home and overseas in August.

Nissan's domestic sales fell 2.4% to 41,747 units, while overseas sales declined 3.9% to 385,001 vehicles, bringing global sales to 426,748 units, down 3.7% year over year. Exports from Japan fell 7.2% to 35,753 units. Global production of Nissan vehicles was also down 8.6% to 406,637 units as local production decreased 7.5% to 59,883 and production outside Japan slipped 8.8% to 346,754 units.

Subaru also saw a 20.9% decline in worldwide production as domestic production fell 4.3% to 44,534 units and overseas production fell 42.2% to 20,842 vehicles. Sales in Japan inched down 1.1% to 10,084 units, while exports fell 22.4% to 37,696 units.

Suzuki's worldwide production suffered a 27.4% drop to 207,162 units as local production fell 15.5% to 65,208 vehicles and overseas production plunged 31.8% to 141,954 units. Domestic sales declined 6.9% to 46,365 units, while exports also fell 22.8% to 12,905 units.
