Facebook, Warner Music Group sign licensing deals; Twitter to stream MLS matches

Top News

* Facebook Inc. entered into a partnership with Warner Music Group Corp. that includes licensing deals covering the music company's recorded music and music publishing catalogs. The companies will be able to develop new products that enable users to personalize their music experiences across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and Oculus.

* Twitter Inc. inked a three-year content deal with Major League Soccer. The deal includes live on-demand content, match highlights and other features.

* Although a cable industry CEO recently compared the battle over net neutrality to the futility of trench warfare, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., said she still sees the possibility of a legislative solution. Blackburn told C-SPAN's "The Communicators" series that she sees enough bipartisan agreement around certain core tenets of net neutrality to make compromise possible.

* Netflix Inc. saw its star rise after an Oscar win for original documentary "Icarus," while Discovery Communications Inc.'s shares fell immediately after the closing of its Scripps Networks Interactive Inc. acquisition. In addition to the awards-show buzz, Netflix made headlines during the week as CEO Reed Hastings spoke to reporters at the company's Los Gatos, Calif., headquarters about its revenue projections and future programming strategy.

Technology

* Intel Corp. could make a takeover bid for Broadcom Ltd. if the Singapore-based chipmaker's proposed acquisition of QUALCOMM Inc. appears likely to succeed, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing people familiar with the matter. The move is among a variety of options Intel is considering in response to Broadcom's $117 billion hostile takeover bid for Qualcomm, according to the report.

* Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo unit will start hauling freight for Google Inc.'s data centers as part of a pilot program in Atlanta. The trucks to be deployed in Atlanta will have drivers in the cabs to monitor systems and take control if required, according to an official blog post.

* Chris Liddell, a former executive at Microsoft Corp. and General Motors Co., is being considered as Gary Cohn's replacement to serve as director of the National Economic Council, the Journal reports, citing people familiar with the discussions. Former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh and White House trade adviser Peter Navarro are also among the names reported as possible candidates.

Telecommunications

* Sprint Corp. is laying off 500 people at its Overland Park, Kan., headquarters campus in a bid to cut costs, The Kansas City Star reports, citing a company spokesman. The first round of job cuts could cover any of the 6,000 staffers at the company's headquarters.

Film

* Walt Disney Co.'s "Black Panther" retained its top spot at the domestic box office for the March 11 weekend with $41.1 million, followed by Disney's "A Wrinkle In Time" at No. 2 with $33.3 million and Aviron Pictures' "Strangers: Prey At Night" at the third spot with $10.5 million, according to comScore Inc. 20th Century Fox's "Red Sparrow" was No. 4 with $8.2 million, while Warner Bros.' "Game Night" was No. 5 with $7.9 million.

The day ahead

Early morning futures indicators pointed to a higher opening for the U.S. market.

In Asia, the Hang Seng was up 1.93% to 31,594.33, while the Nikkei 225 gained 1.65% to 21,824.03.

In Europe as of midday, the FTSE 100 was down 0.02% to 7,225.86, and the Euronext 100 was up 0.41% to 1,034.55.

On the macro front

The U.S. Treasury budget is out due today.
