Emmi US unit acquires cheese plant from Great Lakes Cheese Co.

Emmi Roth USA Inc., U.S. unit of Switzerland-based dairy products retailer Emmi AG, on Jan. 4 said it acquired Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc.'s blue cheese site in Seymour, Wis., allowing the cheese manufacturer to grow its production capacity in the country.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Emmi's purchase includes the related land and all equipment associated with the factory, which currently employs 50 people.

The site can produce over 7 million pounds of cheese, and is equipped to crumble and pack blue cheese for retail or food service, according to the release.

The move is expected to bolster Emmi Roth's specialty cheeses business, which includes blue cheese products under the Buttermilk brand.
