Cathay warns workers against social media misuse amid anti-Beijing protests

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. warned employees that misusing social media could violate Chinese restrictions as the company struggles to deal with the aftermath of staff participation in Hong Kong's anti-Beijing demonstrations, Bloomberg reported.

"Employees should always exercise caution about how their social media usage may be relevant to their own employment, the welfare of others and the business," Cathay said in a statement to staff. "Any employee who participates in illegal activities will be subject to an investigation process which may lead to termination of their employment."

Cathay's CEO quit last week after two pilots and two airport employees were fired for taking part in the pro-democracy protests. The Chinese aviation authority imposed widespread restrictions on the airline and demanded a flight safety and security plan.

The airline reported that turbulence caused by the demonstrations may have "significant impact" on its earnings in August as air travel into Hong Kong "weakened substantially." Last week, protesters forced the Hong Kong airport to shut down and cancel flights by occupying buildings. Recently, a third pilot reportedly left the company because of his comments about the incident.
