Report: Amazon forms 'health & wellness' group within Alexa

Amazon.com Inc. has formed a team within its Alexa voice-assistant division named "health & wellness," CNBC reported May 10, citing an internal company document and sources with knowledge of the matter.

According to the report, the team is expected to make Alexa more useful in the field of healthcare, which would involve handling regulations and data privacy requirements laid out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. It is reportedly also tasked to target areas like diabetes management, care for mothers and infants, and aging.

The group consists of about a dozen members and is headed by Rachel Jiang, who has been with the e-commerce company for five years in various roles, CNBC said.

In January, Amazon, together with partners Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co., unveiled plans to enter the healthcare space with the formation of a company focused on cutting healthcare costs for their U.S. employees and their families.

Amazon in 2017 also teamed up with drugmaker Merck & Co. Inc. to explore the creation of digital consumer solutions for people living with chronic diseases, with an initial focus on diabetes management.

An Amazon representative told S&P Global Market Intelligence that the company does not offer comments on rumors and speculation as a matter of policy.
