New York City sues online sellers of e-cigarettes

New York City on Oct. 8 sued 22 online retailers of e-cigarettes for allegedly selling their products to underage residents in a move that adds to the growing scrutiny of the vaping industry.

The city asked the United States District Court of the Eastern District of New York to forbid the defendants from selling and marketing e-cigarettes to New York City residents under the age of 21. The city also asked the court to prevent the retailers from selling e-cigarettes to New York City residents without installing age-verification systems. New York City seeks damages for the costs of its efforts to address youth vaping.

"The kids of New York are the pride of our city, but to these companies, they're just a source of profit," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a press release. "This lawsuit sends a message: we will do whatever it takes to protect our kids and the health of our city."

New York City's lawsuit, which was first reported by Bloomberg News, joins a growing battle between regulators and the vaping industry over the future of e-cigarettes. A New York court has placed a temporary stay on the state's ban on sales of flavored e-cigarettes.

Meanwhile, the death count tied to a mysterious vaping-related illness has reached at least 18, while over 1,000 lung injuries have been reported as of Oct. 1, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
