Walmart Inc. has ended its Scan & Go mobile app, which lets shoppers scan items by themselves and pay for purchases through the app so they can skip checkout counters and queues, Business Insider reported May 15.
A Walmart spokesperson reportedly confirmed the move to the news outlet, saying the service had "low participation."
Scan & Go was launched in 2013 but the big-box retailer reportedly discontinued it due to customer complaints about its complexities. It rolled out the service again in its Sam's Club stores in 2016 and relaunched it in select Walmart stores in 2017.
In January, the company said it was expanding the trial to 100 more of its stores.
Walmart also unveiled a new checkout service called Check Out With Me last month, which will be tested in the lawn and garden centers of over 350 Walmart stores in the country. Under the program, employees equipped with cellular devices and Bluetooth printers can check out customers and provide a receipt on the spot.
