The Week in OTT: BET+ to launch Sept. 19; Movie Studio rolls out OTT app

The week in over-the-top provides a recap of recent news related to streaming initiatives in the U.S. from various networks and platforms.

Top News

* Viacom Inc.'s BET Networks and Tyler Perry Studios' new subscription video-on-demand service will launch Sept. 19 in the U.S., Variety reported. Priced at $9.99 per month, BET+ will feature more than 1,000 hours of content, including exclusive new original programming and series, movies and specials from BET Networks, Tyler Perry and other African American content creators. The first BET+ original will be a remake of revenge comedy "First Wives Club."

* Netflix Inc. unveiled a slew of new Korean originals, including supernatural action drama "The School Nurse Files" and stand-up comedy "Park Narae: Glamor Warning." Netflix also announced the returning seasons of "Kingdom S2" and unscripted variety show "Busted S2." Other programs include "Extracurricular," "My Holo Love" and "Round Six."

In other platform news

* The Movie Studio Inc. rolled out a new app, which is part of its OTT platform, on Google LLC Google Play and Apple Inc.'s App Store. The company plans to add new content by purchasing film libraries, along with strategic partnership, license and revenue sharing aggregation for other motion picture content. The Movie Studio operates as a vertically integrated motion picture production and distribution company.

* The Walt Disney Co.'s upcoming streaming service Disney+ will not proceed with a short-form unscripted series from "The Muppets" franchise, Deadline.com reported. The comedy, which had a pilot order, will reportedly not go forward over "discrepancy between the writing team's creative vision and that of the top brass at Disney-owned Muppet Studio."

* Facebook Inc. signed partnerships with European publishers to create more content for its video platform Watch. The social media company now has agreements with Germany's Axel Springer SE, Hubert Burda Media and Gruner + Jahr AG & Co. KG; France's Brut, Le Monde and BFM Tv; and Sweden's Expressen. Facebook is also in talks with Channel 4 (UK) and the @4158820 to continue their programs, which were previously streamed on Watch.

* Netflix entered in a multiyear overall deal with writer, director, and producer Patty Jenkins. As part of the deal, the "Wonder Woman" director will produce new series exclusively at Netflix, the company said.

* In other Netflix news, the streaming giant will release its new competition reality show "Rhythm + Flow" in weekly episodic batches. Netflix will make the first four episodes of the show available Oct. 9, with three-episode groups released in subsequent weeks. The company tweeted from its U.S. account that it had released some licensed series on a weekly schedule in the past and that it was "trying something new" with "Rhythm + Flow."
