Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. on Jan. 7 acquired Berlin-based streaming analytics startup Data Artisans GmbH in a €90 million deal.
Alibaba said in a statement that it is "deepening its relationship" with Data Artisans, having worked with the company on its open source stream processing framework, Apache Flink, since 2016. In a separate statement, Data Artisans said it was excited to be "joining forces" with the Chinese company.
The two companies will continue to jointly develop Apache Flink, which processes large volumes of data, enabling users to gain real-time insights into streaming. Alibaba is one of the largest users of the platform, Data Artisans said.
According to the startup's website, other clients include ING Groep NV, Uber Technologies Inc., Zalando SE and Netflix Inc.
Data Artisans said it raised a series B funding round in 2018. Its backers included venture capital firms b-to-v Partners AG, Tengelmann Ventures Management GmbH and Intel Capital.
