Retail trade in Italy fell short of expectations as both value and volume decreased in April from the previous month.
The value of retail trade in Italy fell 0.7% in April from March on a seasonally adjusted basis, falling short of expectations of a 0.2% increase. The volume of retail trade decreased 0.9%.
In the three months to April, value decreased by 0.5% and volume was down 0.2%, compared to the three months to January, according to provisional data from the National Institute of Statistics.
Value of retail trade declined by 4.6% in April from a year earlier and volume was down 5.4% year over year. Large-scale and small-scale distribution fell 6.1% and 3.9%, respectively, but online sales rose 16.2% year over year.
