US weekly coal traffic falls 5.8% YOY

Total U.S. coal rail traffic for the week ended Sept. 14 fell 5.8% year over year to 80,753 carloads, according to data from the Association of American Railroads.

Year-to-date coal rail traffic declined 6.6% through the week, while total rail traffic for the week decreased 4.8% year over year to 526,734 carloads and intermodal units.

BNSF Railway Co. coal shipment volumes clocked in at 39,282 carloads in the week ended Sept. 14, rising 3.7% from the previous week's 37,879 carloads and rising 4.6% compared to 37,541 carloads in the year-ago week.

Union Pacific Corp.'s coal shipment volumes this week were at 18,704 carloads, dropping 2.4% from 19,163 carloads the previous week and 17.1% lower than the previous year's weekly volume of 22,556.

Eastern railroad CSX Transportation Inc.'s shipment volumes of coal stood at 13,733 carloads, down 7.5% from the previous week's 14,839 carloads and posting a decrease of 15.3% compared to 16,206 carloads the same week in the previous year.

Norfolk Southern Corp.'s coal shipment volumes totaled 14,978 carloads for the week, growing 2.3% from the previous week's 14,646 carloads but dropping 12.6% compared to 17,138 carloads the same week a year ago.

Kansas City Southern's latest weekly coal shipment volume was 3,079 carloads, increasing 5.3% from 2,924 carloads the previous week. The railroad serves 10 U.S. states and Mexico.

Data collected by S&P Global Market Intelligence from railroads indicate both cars originated on their lines during the week and cars received from a connecting railroad during the same week.
