German regional court rules in favor of Volkswagen customers

A regional appeals court in the southwest German city of Karlsruhe ruled that Volkswagen AG dealers in the country must take back cars equipped with illegal emissions software or give the owners new vehicles, Reuters reported May 24.

The case was brought by Volkswagen and Audi AG diesel cars made in 2009, 2011 and 2013, the report said. It is the first time a regional appeals court ruled in favor of Volkswagen customers, the newswire added.

In 2015, the automaker admitted to manipulation of its software to skirt U.S. emissions tests.

Volkswagen said it would appeal the ruling at the Federal Appeals Court, Reuters said.
