Polish companies PGE, Orlen to cooperate on offshore wind development

Polish companies PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA and PKN ORLEN SA are joining forces to develop offshore wind power in the country.

"The goal of the initiated cooperation is to combine the potential of two national champions to implement key investments for the country's energy security and a gradual transition to a low-carbon economy," Henryk Baranowski, president of the board of PGE, said in a Sept. 5 news release.

The planned cooperation between PGE and PKN Orlen would include the exchange of information necessary to implement offshore wind farms, efforts to maximize Polish components in the supply chain and potential joint participation in the design and construction of connection infrastructure.

Both companies are working on procedures to select strategic partners to participate in the preparation, construction and operation of concessions in the Baltic Sea.

PGE's offshore unit PGE Baltica wants to build turbines with a total capacity of 2.5 GW by 2030. ORLEN's Baltic Power Sp. z o.o. has started environmental tests and measurements of wind conditions to determine the productivity of a planned 1.2-GW offshore wind farm.
