Albertsons to expand same-day delivery with Instacart

U.S. grocery chain Albertsons Cos. Inc. said Nov. 28 that it has entered into a deal with San Francisco-based delivery startup company Instacart to extend its same-day delivery service.

Albertsons said it expects Instacart's delivery service to be available in more than 1,800 stores nationwide by mid-2018. Once the platform is implemented, the grocer's customers will be able to receive same-day deliveries within one hour.

Instacart has increased its operations to new markets and secured contracts for delivery services with grocers such as Aldi (Süd) GmbH & Co.'s U.S. stores, Kroger Co.'s Ralphs Grocery Co., Costco Wholesale Corp. and Loblaw Companies Ltd., following Amazon.com Inc.'s purchased of Whole Foods Market Inc. in mid-June.

Albertsons has made several moves in 2017, including the rollout of same-day delivery service and drive-up service and the acquisition of meal-kit company Plated. The grocer also reportedly halted its IPO plans in July, according to a July 11 Bloomberg report, citing people familiar with the matter.
