Anthem Inc.'s board has elected Elizabeth Tallett as chairman, effective May 16.

She will succeed Joseph Swedish, who will retire from the board as of the company's annual shareholder meeting. Also, George Schaefer Jr. will step down as lead director, but will remain a member of the board.

Tallett was most recently principal of Hunter Partners, LLC.
