Hormel recalls more than 220,000 pounds of canned meat

Hormel Foods Corp. is recalling approximately 228,614 pounds of canned pork and chicken products due to concerns that they may contain pieces of metal, according to a May 26 statement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, or FSIS.

The move comes after Hormel received four consumer complaints about finding metal objects in the products, with reports of minor oral injuries associated with their consumption.

Subject to the recall are Spam Classic 12-ounce metal cans with a best-by date of February 2021 and production codes F020881, F020882, F020883, F020884, F020885, F020886, F020887, F020888 or F020889; and Hormel Foods Black-Label Luncheon Loaf 12-ounce metal cans with a best-by date of February 2021 and production codes F02098 or F02108. Both products also carry the establishment number EST. 199N on the bottom of the cans.

FSIS said the affected products were produced between Feb. 8 and 10. The Spam Classic product was shipped across the U.S., while the Black-Label Luncheon Loaf was shipped only to Guam.

The agency advised consumers who have the identified cans to either discard them or return the products to their place of purchase.
